By Natgeo: Photo by @TimLaman. The newest Great Ape species, The Tapanuli Orangutan, was just described! This is an adult male I photographed in Batang Toru in 2014 on assignment for @NatGeo, when I was lucky enough to have a chance to visit this remote site in Sumatra. The orangutans living there, only about 800 or less, have now been shown to be genetically distinct from both the regular Sumatran Orangutans, and the Bornean Orangutans. They are now scientifically recognized as a distinct species (Pongo tapanuliensis), and are only found in one small area of Sumatra in the country of Indonesia. Go to @TimLaman to see more images of the Tapanuli Orangutan, and follow the link in my profile to the article on @NatGeo News to learn more. #Endangered, #orangutan, #Tapanuli, #TapanuliOrangutan, #BatangToru, #Sumatra, #Indonesia, #IndonesiaBiodiversity, @NatGeoCreative.
